Dr Ka Yu Cheng is a Senior Research Scientist in the Environment Research Unit of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), based in Perth, Western Australia. He holds a PhD in Environmental Engineering, along with an MPhil and BSc (Hons) in Environmental Science. His research focuses on environmental biotechnology and the development of bio‑based approaches to address industrial waste challenges. His work spans microbial electrochemical systems, biomining and e‑waste recycling, industrial wastewater treatment, and bioremediation. He is particularly interested in sustainable biological processes that break down contaminants and recover useful resources, supporting more circular and environmentally responsible industrial practices. Over his career, he has contributed to advances in microbial‑electrochemical treatment technologies, microbial metal extraction, and the remediation of contaminated sites. He has authored or co‑authored more than 90 peer‑reviewed papers and is an inventor on several patents in applied biotechnology.
