Centre d'excellence autochtone pour le développement minier (ICEMD)

Jenny-Lou Campbell est Anishinaabe et fière membre de la Première Nation de Serpent River, située le long de la rive nord du lac Huron, et réside actuellement à Sudbury, en Ontario.

En tant que directrice générale du Centre d’excellence autochtone pour le développement minier (ICEMD), elle se consacre à l’avancement de la participation autochtone et au renforcement des capacités naturelles, techniques et financières des Premières Nations dans le secteur du développement minier et de l’exploitation minière.

Avant de rejoindre l'ICEMD, Jenny a été analyste des politiques minières auprès de la Nation Anishinabek et a occupé divers postes dans l'industrie minière, à titre de promoteur et de consultante. Elle est titulaire d'un baccalauréat en sciences de l'Université Lakehead et d'un diplôme d'intervenante auprès des enfants et des familles autochtones du Collège Sault.

Rio TInto

Operational water management expertise coupled with an ability to understand, influence and communicate water risk and performance

Scott provides specialist water management support and expertise across Rio Tinto’s portfolio. He has driven the development and implementation of the water risk framework and represents Rio Tinto on the International Committee of Mines and Metals (ICMM) and Mineral Council of Australia (MCA). Scott is currently the Chair of the ICMM Water Working Group.

With 35 years of experience in the resource sector and specializing in water, Scott’s experience is broad and gained through his involvement in civil engineering, environmental management, geotechnical investigations and design projects associated with coal and metalliferous mines in Australia and Asia. It is from this broad platform that Scott has developed his understanding of operational water management including the complex inter-dependencies with the environment, mine planning, processing, ore body knowledge, tailings, landform reclamation, communities, heritage, legal and closure planning functions.

Scott joined Group HSES as the Practice Lead – Water in 2017. His strong technical base combined with an ability to understand, influence, communicate and be strategic, provides a solid platform to drive and embed effective assessment and communication of Rio Tinto’s water management risk and performance both internally and externally with stakeholders and investors.

Director, Tailings & Geotechnical Engineering
Lundin Mining

Andre Gagnon is a professional geotechnical engineer with 15 years of experience in the mining industry.  He graduated from Queen’s University in Canada with a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Geological Engineering, and later completed an MSc in Engineering Geology at Imperial College London.  Andre joined Lundin Mining in 2017 and is based out of the corporate office located in Toronto.  He leads the development and supports implementation of the company’s corporate tailings strategies and programs.  Prior to joining Lundin Mining, Andre was a member of the corporate technical services team at Goldcorp where he managed the global tailings stewardship program and supported various tailings innovation projects.  Prior to Goldcorp, we was a consultant in the mining industry specializing in geotechnical site investigations and tailings facility design and construction. 

Andre is a member of the Mining Association of Canada’s Tailings Working Group.

Port franc-McMoRan

Francis est responsable de la gestion du portefeuille et de la stratégie énergétiques de l'entreprise, ainsi que de la gestion de l'ensemble des actifs et des besoins fonciers et hydrauliques de l'entreprise. Avant d'occuper son poste actuel, Francis a occupé divers postes au sein de ports francs, supervisant la remise en état et la réhabilitation des sites, et assumant un rôle dans le développement commercial.

Au cours de sa carrière de plus de 30 ans dans l'industrie minière, Francis a occupé divers postes chez Magma Copper Company, BHP Billiton et Freeport-McMoRan. Il a vécu et travaillé en Arizona, en Californie, au Texas et en Australie.

Francis est diplômé de l'Université Brigham Young avec une licence en économie et a ensuite fréquenté l'Université de l'Arizona où il a obtenu sa maîtrise en administration des affaires de l'Eller College of Management.

En février 2011, Francis a été élu président de l'Association minière de l'Arizona, poste qu'il occupe actuellement. Francis est également membre du comité exécutif et du conseil d'administration de la Chambre de commerce du Grand Phoenix.

Manager, Environment & Systems
Hudbay Minerals

Shirley has over 30 years of service with Hudbay Minerals and is currently the Manager, Environment and Systems. 

Shirley has held a key, on-going role within the management system for the last 18 years.  That role has a strong focus on legal and other requirements, including understanding existing and changing regulations, associated standards and how to ensure that the company complies with these requirements.  Relevant research and development opportunities occasionally overlap with changing expectations.   

As the long-serving chair of the Initiative Leaders team responsible for the Mining Association of Canada’s Towards Sustainable Mining initiative, Shirley has helped to continually improve the TSM protocols and the ensuing site-level performance improvements at Hudbay. 

Membership on the board of directors of the Auditing Association of Canada as well as an entity known as The Collaboration helps Shirley maintain her skills as an ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 auditor.

Director of Mining & Industrial Water Quality Regulation
Department of Water Sanitation

With a BSc. Honours (Chemistry) Degree obtained from the University of the Western Cape in 2001, Raquel has been employed at the Department of Water and Sanitation since 2002 and has largely been responsible for water quality management and water resource regulation throughout her career. 

She has been championing water quality management programmes in the Department for years including the Establishment of the Anti-Pollution Task Team and has worked extensively with mines, to ensure that they comply with the required legislation.
Ms. Mazwi has managed a number of projects in the Department such as Jan Dissels River Compulsory Licensing Project which has been the first of its kind in the whole country, Bulshoek Illegal Water Use project, the Sandveld Integrated Water Management Plan, etc. 

She is currently the Project Manager for the Waste Discharge Charge System, The Waste Discharge Standards and Compliance Monitoring to the Resource Quality Objectives (with a focus on the quality parameter) as well as overseeing the management of the 3 Acid Mine Drainage Treatment Plants in Gauteng, and development of water resource regulations (currently busy drafting the Unconventional Gas Regulations as well as the Groundwater Management and Protection Regulations).

Kristin est directrice mondiale de l'environnement au sein de l'équipe Développement durable et Relations externes de Newmont Mining Corporation, dont le siège social est à Denver, au Colorado. À ce titre, elle est chargée d'apporter son expertise et de promouvoir l'alignement sur les normes, stratégies et objectifs afin de soutenir la gestion et la performance environnementales dans ses domaines d'intervention : l'eau, les parcs à résidus et les installations de lixiviation en tas, ainsi que les stocks de stériles et de minerai.

Kristin est ingénieure. Avant de rejoindre Newmont en 2021, elle a travaillé au sein d'équipes multidisciplinaires pour préparer des modèles de bilan hydrique et élaborer des plans de gestion de l'eau, analyser les données sur la qualité de l'eau, ainsi que concevoir et optimiser les procédés de traitement de l'eau pour le secteur des mines et des métaux. Kristin est titulaire d'un baccalauréat en génie chimique et biosciences, d'une maîtrise en ingénierie et politiques publiques de l'Université McMaster et d'un diplôme « Eau sans frontières » de l'Institut de l'eau, de l'environnement et de la santé de l'Université des Nations Unies.

Dr. Lesley Warren leads the Lassonde Institute of Mining at the University of Toronto as Managing Director and Chief Principal Investigator. She has an internationally recognized track record of integrated geochemical and microbiological investigation. As a leading expert, she has partnered with numerous energy and mining industry companies, consortiums and governmental agencies around the globe. Dr. Warren’s work is breaking new ground and helping strengthen the mining industry today and into the future. 

As Chief Principal Investigator her research develops transformative industry advancements through emerging molecular biological techniques. Some of her current research projects with Vale, Syncrude, COSIA, Glencore and CSIRO Australia develop real-world solutions around bio-mines and bio-intelligent organisms for mining impacted water. Through leading-edge wastewater management innovations she is helping industry be more sustainable, efficient and cost effective.

Principal Hydrologist Strategic Planning
Minera Las Bambas

Jorge Zafra is a Mechanical Fluid Engineer from the National University of San Marcos with 20 years of experience in water management across various industries. He holds a Master's degree in Hydrology and Water Resources Management from the IHE Delft Institute for Water Education in the Netherlands.

Mr. Zafra has extensive experience in the design of hydraulic infrastructure, road drainage, hydroelectric power plants, pit dewatering plans, water balances, hydrological and hydrogeological modelling, climate change, and water management strategies in mining.
Currently, he serves as the Principal Hydrologist in the Strategic Planning Management team at Minera Las Bambas, Peru. Where he leads the comprehensive water management strategy. He also provides technical support for operations and long-term plans, including dewatering plans, water balance, water management infrastructure strategy, ensuring alignment with international standards such as those of the ICMM.

With 10 years of teaching experience, Mr. Zafra has taught courses in hydrology, hydraulics. He currently teaches Hydrogeology in the Environmental Engineering Faculty at UTEC-Lima.
